How to approach GenZ colleagues effectively?

This blog focuses on how older generations, such as Baby Boomers and Millennials, should treat Gen Z employees.

Generation Z: What shaped them in the Slovak environment

Generation Z, also referred to as “Gen Z,” refers to people born between approximately 1997 and 2012. This generation has grown up in an environment heavily influenced by technological advances, global events and social change. In the Slovak context, the following factors had a significant influence on the formation of this generation:

The environment in which they grew up

  1. Technological time

Gen Z grew up in the era of the digital revolution. The internet, smartphones and social media have become an integral part of their daily lives. Technology has shaped the way they communicate, learn and spend their leisure time. These young people are used to instant access to information and have high expectations of technological solutions, even in the work environment.

  1. Economic stability and uncertainty

Slovakia has undergone various economic changes since its establishment in 1993. Generation Z has experienced periods of both economic growth and uncertainty, which has affected their view of financial stability and job opportunities. Many of them grew up in families that had to adapt to new economic conditions, which reinforced their adaptability and pragmatism.

  1. Globalisation and multicultural influences

This generation has grown up in a globalised world where cultural and social influences come from all corners of the globe. Access to international media, films, music and social networks has enriched their perspectives and fostered openness to diversity. At the same time, however, globalisation has also brought challenges related to identity and national belonging.

  1. Education system and reforms

The Slovak education system has undergone several reforms that have affected the way young people learn and prepare for working life. Generation Z is used to modern learning methods, e-learning and innovative approaches to learning. Their ability to quickly learn and adapt to new technologies is one of their strengths.

  1. Social and political change

Generation Z grew up during a period of significant social and political change. Slovakia’s accession to the European Union, the migration crisis and various political events have shaped their views on politics, social justice and civic engagement. They are more politically engaged and sensitive to human rights and environmental issues.

Characteristics and values of Generation Z

  1. Technology savvy: Gen Z is very tech savvy and expects technology to be integrated into all aspects of their lives, including work.
  2. Diversity and Inclusion: this generation values diversity and inclusion highly, which is reflected in their preferences when choosing employers and work environments.
  3. Pragmatism and security: they are practical and focused on financial and personal security, which influences their career decisions.
  4. Transparency and authenticity: they expect open communication and authenticity from employers and leaders.
  5. Rapid feedback and growth: they prefer frequent feedback and clear opportunities for career growth.

How to manage Gen Z employees

  1. Technology integration: provide modern technology tools and platforms to facilitate work and communication.
  2. Promote diversity and inclusion: create an inclusive work environment where diversity is welcomed and encouraged.
  3. Financial stability and security: offer competitive wages and benefits that provide financial security.
  4. Authenticity and transparency: maintain open and honest communication with employees.
  5. Career development and feedback: Provide frequent feedback and clear career paths that allow for rapid growth and development.

Conclusion

Generation Z brings new challenges and opportunities to the workplace. Understanding their specific needs and values can make a significant contribution to their effective management and to creating a productive and harmonious working environment. Older generations of managers should be open to change and ready to adapt their approaches to support this new generation of talent.
